Author's first novel, a dark & chilling portrait of the underbelly of his native Brooklyn, New York, which was the subject of an obscenity trial in Britain. Made into an equally dark movie in 1989. Orig. published in segments in various literary magazines, 1957-1964, this is the FIRST EDITION, Second Printing, in hardcover by Grove Press from 1964. With red paper over quarter black cloth-covered boards, lettered in dark red. Condition is only Good, downgraded primarily due to a dampstain that impacts the outer page edges on the lower third of the book along the fore edge only: inside is unmarked. Small stain of similar nature along top outside page edges near spine. Otherwise, it is generally clean, binding straight & strong, pages modestly tanned, endpapers more heavily, but completely unmarked. The unclipped DJ (with orig. $5.00 price intact) is also Good, downgraded due to soiling/darkening to spine & edgewear all around. Nicely protected in new clear mylar cover Free! Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Same Day Shipping on all orders received by 2 pm Weekdays (Pacific time); later orders, weekends & holidays ship very next business day.
