The Fatal Lozenge: An Alphabet

A humorous romp through the alphabet, with all sorts of savory & unsavory persons meeting ghastly ends, with illustrations from the brilliant mind & pen of Edward Gorey representing each letter. Unpaginated.This is the true First Edition, published in the US in 1960; it would be republished in Britain the following year in a hardcover format with new cover art & a new title, "The Gorey Alphabet" (see our listing #017898) for that title), as well as in a reprint from Switzerland in 1975 (see our listing #018343 for a signed copy). This is not the later reprint from "A Gorey Festival"; all points match the true FIRST EDITION, Second issue ($1.75 price) per Toledano (A6b). Small (5.75" x 4.5") softcover has deep blue paper wrappers decorated with one of Gorey's wonderfully macabre scenes, this one a woman serving what is sure to be his final drink to an emaciated gent in a large armchair. Condition is VG: very clean & bright, stitched binding strong & straight, pages white with slight tanning/light soil to outside edges. Former owner's name in small black marker on ffep, else unmarked. Rubbing to extremities, , heaviest along interface between spine & front cover. The upper-outer corner of the back cover is dogeared. The inner seam of the verso of the ffep & the half title page has an oddly tanned strip down the center, like an inkblot; does not appear to be a dampstain & no other signs of staining/discoloration.
