Highly acclaimed children's book which was among the first (in 1946) to address racial prejudice. It features an African-American lead character, April, who lives in a Philadelphia suburb (Germantown, where the author lived), is active in her Brownie Scout Troop, & receives a wonderful surprise for her 10th birthday. A FIRST EDITION, later printing (lists to a 1956 book in front) , this hardcover book has decorative paper over boards with a design matched on the accompanying DJ. Condition is downgraded to Good because it is an Ex-Lib copy, with card pocket & the usual stamps & markingsto front matter & one interior page. Heavy rubbing to lower extremities from shelf. Otherwise, it is very clean, binding tight & square, pages slightly off-white but completely unmarked. Slightly darkened area of tape residue to front cover through part of title. The price-clipped DJ is VG, well preserved under library mylar, with a tine bit of edgewear, light soil/rubbing, & call number taped to lower spine.
