Famed rare book dealer & long-time New York resident Stern offers this first full-length portrait of the colorful Fowler family of that same city & their wide-ranging influence across the 19th-early 20th centuries, particularly in advancing the practice of phrenology, ie, the practice of divining character & personality from the configuration of the skull. In 348 pages with Index & extensive Notes + 24 pages of photos. A First Edition, first printing from 1971, this hardcover has bright yellow cloth-covered boards with red design to front/ lettering to spine. Condition is Fine (our highest grade): completely clean, binding tight & square, hinges secure. Pages white with no tanning or foxing. NO writing or underlining or highlighting; not ex-lib. Extremely slight rubbing to extremities is only flaw.
