Ahead of its time, this children's story told the story of an interracial friendship between 2 boys who learned to work together. Illustrated on nearly every page with the colorful paintings of "distinguished young Negro artist" Ernest Crichlow, who began his career as an artist with the Works Progress Administration (WPA) & had his first exhibition in Harlem in 1938. A FIRST EDITION, slightly later ("O") printing, this hardcover book has deep blue textured cloth over boards lettered in black to front & spine. Condition is VG+: very clean & bright, binding straight & strong, hinges intact, pages creamy white with mild edge tanning. Downgraded solely because it is an Ex-Lib copy, with card pocket & minimal stamps & markings in front matter & to 2 outside page edges. NO other writing, underlining, or highlighting. The unclipped DJ is Fine, having been protected under library mylar, which has been carefully removed (but leaving paper residue inside both covers of book) & replaced with new: very bright & colorful with virtually NO edgewear, just slight darkening to top edge of back cover. Our photos depict the EXACT book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have. Same day shipping on all orders received by 2 pm Weekdays, Pacific time; later orders, weekends, & holidays ship very next business day.
