Twenty dramatic woodcut engravings by Russian-American illustrator Boris Artzybashef (1899-1965) bring these 58 classic myths to new life, including tales from the Egyptian, Babylonian, Persian, post-Christian Jewish, Greek, Roan, Graeco-Roman, Celtic, Finnish, Icelandic, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Polynesian, Peruvian, Central American, Mexican, & Zuni traditions. In 325 pages with Index & essay by the editor, "The Significance of Mythology." A FIRST EDITION, First printing from Sept. 1930, this hardcover book has tan cloth-covered boards decorated & lettered in black with design & lettering to front & spine in gilt. Condition is Fair-Good: the exterior boards are quite soiled with random spots, & both boards are loosened, as both hinges are split, exposing underlying webbing. Cloth is split across center spine & heavily worn/frayed/chipped at both ends. Text block is strong & secure. Interior is very clean, & the illustrations are virtually flawless aside from modest tanning to edges. Former owner's name & old price in pen on ffep; NO other writing, underlining, or highlighting; not ex-lib. No DJ or slipcase. Our photos depict the exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have!
