Descriptive catalogue for the 1947/48 academic year of Fairfax Hall in Waynesboro, VA, a finishing school for young ladies. Designed by renowned New York architect Stanford White, & originally functioning as a hotel in 1890, then converted to the Brandon Institute, a coeducational facility in 1913, it opened as Fairfax Hall in 1920, & operated in this capacity until it closed its doors in 1975. The school's primary purpose was to "develop its students into the highest type of womanhood." Enrollment was limited to 140 students who got to live in a "home-like" woodland setting situated on a plateau above the town in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Shenandoah Valley. Highlights included a picturesque open-air pool, spacious reception hall with open fireplace, student rooms, classrooms, dining areas, a colonnade perfumed with honeysuckle and wisteria, & a "sunny, cheerful outlook" throughout. Condition is VG: rose-colored wrappers lettered in embossed white script to front. Fading to spine & top edge, moderate rubbing & mild creasing to outermost extremities. Former owner's name in pen in Ex Libris box on page 3. Two light pen marks to front, some scattered white spots. Small 4to (8.75" x 11"), in 58 pages, with duotone photos of students, faculty, the campus, & nearby natural attractions throughout. Perforated page in rear has been neatly removed; this was likely a card to send in for more information. A nostalgic & revealing look at what constituted education for young women in the mid-century South. Our photos depict the exact bHeavyook you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have!
