One in a collection of "fuzzy wuzzy" books issued by Whitman in which many of the illustrations of the title character were covered in flocking to give them a "fuzzy" texture for young readers. Here, the star is Woofus, a lovable poodle who was laughed at because he was black, instead of brown like his brothers & sisters, telling how he makes a friend of Tar Baby, the kitten, & eventually finds love in a family. Charming drawings by renowned Indiana artist Florence Sarah Winship ground the book squarely in mid-century white America. A FIRST EDITION, first printing, from 1944, this hardcover 4to has colorfully decorated paper over boards with flocking to dog & title on front cover. Condition is VG+: very clean & bright, binding straight & strong, pages moderately tanned but completely supple. All flocking intact on all images. Minor rubbing & fading to extremities & the paper covering the spine is split near the head, crinkled at bottom & worn at corners. The unclipped DJ is Good+, missing a large triangular corner at top through spine & milder chipping at other edges; heavy rubbing along flaps. Nicely protected in new mylar cover free! Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have on hand. Same day shipping on all orders received by 2 pm Pacific time (PST); later orders, weekends & holidays ship very next business day.
