Single issue of this short-lived (Jan. 1968-July 1971), bimonthly magazine dedicated to radical politics, edited by Ralph Ginzburg, which ceased publication when he started serving his prison sentence in 1972 for violating federal obscenity laws. (He later wrote "Castrated: My Eight Months in a Federal Prison" to describe his time there). Although he tried to revive it as a tabloid newspaper with his wife after his release, his attempt failed and the new Avant-Garde lasted only one issue. The magazine was "seminal, but somewhat overlooked by a wider public.which broke taboos, rattled some nerves and made a few enemies." The magazine marked the third major collaboration between Ginzburg and Herb Lubalin, the magazine's talented art director, & together the two created publications known for their "candor and provocativeness.[which] landed them in legal trouble." Lubalin's artistic work on the magazine would lead to the development of a typeface that still bears his name. The issue we are offering was one of the magazine's most risque cover designs, featuring not only a woman in the full bloom of pregnancy, but nude at that. Its contents include articles by science writer R. Michael Davidson; a "black manifesto" by Dick Gregory; a section (compiled by Leslie M. Pockell wherein 40 well-known "creators, critics, & connoissurs of high and pop art" speculate on which modern works will endure; a profile of American protest singer Phil Ochs, with song lyrics, by Peter Schjeldahl; a fable entitled, "The President's Golden Zipper" byFred Rayfield; a profile of 20th-century hermit Sylvan Hart by J. Randal; a previously unpublished short story by Roald Dahl; a one-act play by Gordon Carlson; "The Sexual Revolution: A Running Commentary,' a photo essay by Ralph M. Hattersley, Jr; & a full-color section featuring 17 paintings by the modern Dutch artist Melle Oldeboerrigter, the first to introduce his work to an American audience. Cover photograph by Dewayne Dalrymple, reproduced inside with a Poem by Robert Joe Stout. Unpaginated. Square softcover 4to (11 x 11") is in Good condition: stiff stapled wrappers are split at spine, much edgewear, interior pages clean & unmarked, but heavily tanned, though still supple. Of the 6 glossy page of color reproductions of artist Melle O., 4 are completely loose. Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have!
