One in a series of late-19th-century children's books from the Henry Altemus Co. of Philadelphia, this one a collection of both favorite & lesser-known fairy tales from Jacob & Wilhelm (here anglicized to "William") Grimm. In 255 pages + 16 additional pages of other titles in the Altemus library in rear, illustrated throughout with lovely pen-and-ink drawings + many full-page plates, some in full color--65 in all--by unattributed artists. A FIRST EDITION, unknown printing, from 1898, this hardcover16mo (5.25" x 6.75") has colorfully decorated cloth-covered boards with paper title boxes lettered in red & black to front & spine. Much more elaborate design than found on other printings, this one depicts a pastoral scene complete with milkmaids, cows, ducks, & a windmill. Condition is Good+/VG-: generally quite clean, with a large soiled circle to front title box. Interior pages creamy white & completely unmarked. Binding is sewn, with individual signatures stapled, showing modest rust. First signature of 36 pages a bit loose, but secure; rest of binding strong & straight. Hinges intact, but gutter cracked at frontispiece. A lovely little book! Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Same Day Shipping on all orders received by 2 pm Weekdays (Pacific); later orders, weekends & holidays ship very next business day.
