Generally believed to have been written by Wilde for the actress Sarah Bernhardt, this play was banned in England, though popular in Paris. Originally published in 1891, this is an undated later edition from the Book Collectors Association of New York (a noted publisher of slightly erotic works in the 1930s), with the striking woodcut illustrations of Art Nouveau artist Aubrey Beardsley. With plain green cloth lettered in (faded) gilt to spine, this small octavo (5.5" x 7.75") is in VG condition: very clean, but a semicircular stain across top edges of both boards & spine (photo 1). Binding strong & straight, pages creamy white with moderate, age-appropriate tanning, but completely unmarked. Exterior shows mild-moderate rubbing to extremities, heaviest at corners & spine tips, which show some fraying. No DJ. Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have on hand. Same day shipping on all orders received by 2 pm weekdays (Pacific time); later orders, weekends & holidays ship very next business day.
