Book #2 of two in the series designed for girls in the early 20th century, each featuring a heroine with different abilities & inclinations, most involved in solving mysteries (like their counterpart who would come around in the 1930s, Nancy Drew). Ms Garis was a writer in the same Stratemeyer Syndicate that produced the Drew books, but she insisted on writing under her own name. Set in the author's own New Jersey, this first book was originally issued with the title, "Connie Loring's Gypsy Friend,'' but like the first book in the series, reissued with a new title, same text & appearance. The story finds Connie befriending a "black-eyed Gypsy girl" in her New Jersey hometown whom the other girls refuse to accept. In 249 pages with a note from the publisher in rear; glossy frontispiece, 3 glossy internals, & cover art (though this is unattributed) by Ruth H. Bennett. Hardcover 12mo has olive green cloth-covered boards stamped with a black image of Connie inside an artist's palette, lettered in bright orange to front cover/black to spine. Condition is Near Fine: exceptionally clean & bright, interior pages are creamy white with mild, age-appropriate tanning, completely unmarked save for former owner's address label & a gift card enclosure pasted to free front endpaper. Mild corner bumping & rubbing to extremities. The unclipped DJ is VG+, with modest rubbing, chipping, slight darkening to spine; colors bright; nicely protected in new clear mylar cover Free! Our photos depict the EXACT book you will receive from us--never "stock" images of books we don't actually have!
