One in a series of "most popular" collections of music from this publisher, this book is a compilation of traditional African American dirges, spirituals, lullabys, laments, & uplifting work songs, obtained from plantation owners, freed-men, industrial teachers, & minstrels." Displaying the racism of the period, the publishers describe in their Preface how "in the evenings [after working in the heat of the plantation cotton fields during the day] the negro gave us the git of his child mind" with these simple songs. They also saw no irony in the fact that the songs were selected & arranged by a white Harvard student. A FIRST EDITION from 1911, this softcover octavo has 108 pages with black-and-white decorative wrappers, black cloth-wrapped spine. Condition is Fair: front cover is torn nearly completely in half directly below center. Stitched binding is secure but loosening. Interior pages creamy white with modest tanning, quite supple & unmarked. Some corner curling/chipping. Both covers show soiling, chipping, & rubbing. Our photos depict the exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Same day shipping on all orders received by 2 pm Weekdays (Pacific time); later orders, Weekends, & holidays ship very next business day.
