SIGNED by the Author with a personalized inscription to Miriam & Leo Chall, just removed from storage where it has been since the deaccessioning of the collection of Dr. Leo Chall (co-founder of Sociological Abstracts) 40 years ago. A FIRST EDITION, First Printing, from 1978, this octavo has soft gray cloth-covered boards with deep blue/green lettering to spine. The renowned sociologist issues a call for his fellow academics to "discard their academic isolation & rivalries" & come out into the modern world to help prevent the "short-sightedness & greed of entrepreneurs & the "hazardous game plans [that serve] political, economic, & military interests" rather than those of the ordinary citizen. Ways that sociology can truly become a science "in the service of humanity" are explored, in 236 pages. SIGNED by the Author with a personalized dedication to Leo & Miriam Chall, founders of Sociological Abstracts whom the author became colleagues & friends with while at Columbia University in the 1950s. Condition is Near Fine, downgraded solely due to foxed spota to all external page edges. Else, as bright & clean as Brand New! Binding strong & straight, hinges secure, pages white & completely unmarked. The unclipped DJ is also Near Fine, with mild rubbing to top extremities. off-white with mild tanning, heavier to edges, but completely unmarked.
