Groundbreaking treatise in the world of health & medicine, acknowledged by the author to be a "quite unpopular view,'' which held that the human body is designed by God to be naturally healthy--it is only our lifestyle choices that cause it to fall into ill health. The author was then Physician-in-Chief at Our Home on the Hill-Side in Dansville (Livingston County), NY, a sanitarium founded to promote the "water cure" & other natural treatments at a spa-like setting in 1852; the Jackson family acquired it in 1858. Believing that the digestive system held the key to health & illness, Dr. Jackson developed the first breakfast cereal at the sanitarium in 1863--Granula (its name later changed to "granola" by his competitor Harvey Kellogg when he brought out his own version of the product [Wikipedia]).In 537 pages, the book applies Dr. Jackson's ideas to many common diseases, ailments, & health concerns & describes natural methods of healing them. Published right there in Dansville in 1874, it was first entered into copyright in 1968, so this appears to be a slightly later but contemporary printing. Condition is VG: brown cloth-covered boards stamped with gilt lettering to front & spine are generally clean & quite sturdy, with random spots & rubbing to extremities & on a few pages throughout text. Sewn binding strong & straight, hinges secure. Tissue guard separating frontispiece portrait of the author & a photo of the sanitarium is intact, but with a missing chip & heavily darkened. Pages creamy white with mild foxing, in front matter, lightly & evenly tanned in text. Some pen notations to title page & former owner's name in penciled script to preceding blank endpaper; else unmarked. No DJ, as issued. Our photos depict the exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Same day shipping on all orders received by 2 pm Weekdays (Pacific time); later orders, Weekends, & holidays ship very next business day.
