Part of this publisher's "Fairy Children" series, this one dedicated "To Young America from the Oldest Americans" with a painting of an elderly Indian man in full tribal regalia. It contains a collection of 9 authentic Native American stories, all except one adapted from legends collected by "Henry R. Schoolcraft, ethnologist & government agent for the Lake Superior country,'' first published in 1839 as "Algic Researches." Orig. published in this format with colorful illustrations by John Rae in 1921, this is the (stated) Thirty-fifth edition, c. same era, as there is an old gift inscription dated 1928 to lower part of half-title page, partially covered by a former owner's bookplate. Octavo has decorative paper-over-boards, with red & black lettering on a background drawn to simulate Indian beadwork. Condition is VG: very clean, binding strong & straight, hinges secure, pages creamy white & completely unmarked save for those previously noted additions to half-title page. Moderate rubbing to extremities, heavy at all corners & both ends of spine, with some paper loss here & in a few small places along spine itself. No DJ.
