Only the 2nd book written under her own name by the pioneering journalist Mildred Wirt Benson, who had a long & prolific career as one of the premier writers of juvenile series books across the 20th century, most famously penning the Nancy Drew series under her pen name "Carolyn Keene." In 183 pages, this is a FIRST EDITION, First Printing, from 1959. It is an EX-LIB copy in a solid reinforced library binding: decorated cloth over boards with the same image as on the accompanying DJ. Usual library stamps, marking, card pocket. condition is Good: light soil from previous readers & a noticeable stain to external fore edge & rear endpapers. Interior pages clean & unmarked.Mild pushing to both ends of spine & slight soil/rubbing to extremities. The DJ is a FACSIMILE of the original, & is Near Fine, with the same image as on the book's front board. , but pages 35, listing only to Self in front matter & to previous title on front DJ flap, this small octavo (5.5" x 8") has medium blue cloth over boards lettered in black to front & spine, with a glossy frontispiece (by Furman, unattributed in text) & decorative endpapers, in 212 pages. Condition is VG: quite clean, binding strong & straight, but a little shaky, hinges secure. Pages significantly tanned, commensurate with age, unmarked save for several former owners' names in pencil to the "This is my book" box on ffep; we never erase these, out of respect for those long-ago readers. Slight fading & light rubbing to extremities, with very mild fraying at corners. The slightly clipped DJ is Good, with fading, rubbing to extremities, & a substantial chip from top edge of front cover where it meets the spine; nicely protected in clear mylar cover by previous owner.
