Lovely gift edition of one of Steinbeck's best-loved books, brought to life for a new generation of readers with the brilliant oil paintings of Massachusetts artist Peggy Worthington (Best), who once taught Norman Rockwell. First published in 1935, this is the first printing of this New Illustrated Edition from 1947 (First, thus), with the 17 paintings by Worthington appearing on the DJ, endpapers, title page, & throughout the text. 213 pages. Small quarto (6.75" x 9.5") has tan cloth-covered boards lettered in deep teal to spine, with a teal bordered colorful front paper pastedown to front board. Condition is VG+: extremely clean, pages creamy white & completely unmarked, binding strong & straight. Mild bumping to corners & both ends of spine. The price-clipped DJ is just Good: colorful & bright, but downgraded due to many small nicks & chips & paper loss at corners/both ends of spine, with a large missing chip & wrinkled torn section to top edge of back cover; looks lovely protected in new mylar cover.
