Another charming book by this husband-wife team of illustrators who had already won numerous awards for children's book illustration, including the Caldecott Medal in 1940. this one tells the Scandinavia story behind the American proverb of the title, illustrated on nearly every page with colorful drawings lithographed directly on stone by the authors& printed in four colors by George C. Miller of New York. A FIRST EDITION, First Printing, from 1943, with wartime paper notice, this 4to (9" x 12") is in only Fair condition, with heavy rubbing & fading/discoloration to extremities, paper loss at exterior corners. Red cloth binding is heavily faded, as is the brightly colored paper pastedowns on both front & rear boards. Interior is generally clean, with some spotting to lower-outer edges of first few pages. Unpaginated. Binding secure, front hinge starting, with old tape repair at lower end. Pages heavily but evenly tanned, no writing. No DJ.
