The 35th book in the original Oz canon, this was the first to be both written & illustrated by John Neill, who illustrated all of the original Oz books by L. Frank Baum & here offers his pen-and-ink drawings throughout the books 318 pages & decorative endpapers. Orig. published in 1940, this is a later printing of that First Edition, with running titles on pages 306-318 on right-hand pages (rectos), chapter numbers on left (verso; Hanff & Greene, p. 108) & black-&-white illustrations now instead of the original full color. In publisher's light blue cloth over boards, with colorful front pastedown, black lettering & design to spine, condition is VG+: very clean, pages creamy white & unmarked save for former owner's name in pen to ffep top edge; "This Book Belongs To" box is blank. Binding strong & straight, front hinge cracked. Exterior shows light random soil, very modest rubbing to extremities; nicely protected in new clear 2.5 mil mylar cover free! No DJ.
