The 35th book in the original Oz canon, & the second of only three books both written & illustrated by John R. Neill, who illustrated all of the original Oz books by L. Frank Baum. Here, he offers his fanciful pen-and-ink drawings throughout the books. This book was never issued with color plates, so they are black&-white. With 309 pages & decorative endpapers, as well as the colorful front paper pastedown. Octavo (7" x 9.25") has green-gray cloth over boards, with darker green lettering to spine. Orig. published in 1941, this is a very early if not a First Printing: enclosed list of books cut from DJ lists to this title only, numbering it #34. Spine lettering printed diagonally, with hyphen, & "Oz" printed as a stylized device. However, there are 20 page gatherings, not 16 as in the First/First. Condition is nonetheless VG+: very clean, pages creamy white with mild tanning, unmarked save for former owner's name stamp to endpapers & in "This Book Belongs To" box. Binding strong & straight, hinges secure. Exterior shows very light soil & slight pushing to both ends of spine. No DJ.
