From the Museum of Modern Art, which was gifted the original photo album in which these images were housed, 44 (of the original 159 plates) photogravure images have been compiled here in this unique collection. The photos were taken by Miss Frances Benjamin Johnston at the turn of the 20th century, a pioneering feminist & female photojournalist, & initially appeared at the 1900 Paris Exhibition as representative of American Negro life, specifically, day-to-day activities at the all-black Hampton Institute in Hampton, Virginia, which had been open only 31 years when these photos were taken. In 55 pages, with an Introduction & Note on the photographer by Lincoln Kirstein, librarian emeritus at the Bienecke at Yale. A FIRST EDITION, First Printing, from 1966, this oblong (7.00" x 9.5") softcover has cream-colored wrappers with a photo to front, glued binding. Condition is VG-: quite clean inside, with light soil & rubbing/scraping/foxing to exterior. Slight upward curling to fore edge side of book, but no creases. Pages off-white & completely unmarked with light tanning. Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Same Day Shipping on all orders received by 2 pm Weekdays (Pacific time); later orders, weekends & holidays ship very next business day
