Original hand-etched wood engraving. Full page illustration in Harper's Weekly, May 17, 1873. Condition Good. Light toning but image and paper intact. Image is clear. Size is 11" x 16". . . . . . . The illustration titled "Modocs Scalping and Torturing Prisoners" appeared in the May 17, 1873, edition of Harper's Weekly (Vol. 17, No. 855, p. 416). It is a wood engraving depicting a violent scene from the Modoc War (18721873) in Oregon. The artwork shows a Modoc Indian holding up the scalp of a dead soldier at his feet, with other Modocs in the background near another soldier's body. This illustration reflects the conflict's brutality and was published during a period of heightened tension, shortly after key events like the April 11, 1873, assassination of General Edward Canby by Modoc leader Kintpuash (Captain Jack). The image is housed in the Library of Congress.
