First Edition. 89 pp. Original boards with paper title label to front board and new spine. Marks to boards and wear to corners; recent respine is in fine condition. Spotting at page edges not affecting text. No half title. Engraved frontispiece by Fuseli, two vignettes in text (one, a portrait of Penelope by Kirk after Joshua Reynolds), and other printed illustrations. Loss to the bottom right corner of p.15. A collection of poetry written by Sir Brooke Boothby, an eighteenth century poet and translator, in the wake of his five year old daughter Penelope's death. The book, Fuseli frontispiece, and Penelope's stone memorial which realistically depicted her sleeping, had an impact on eighteenth century English grief and on the Romantic idea of children. This is evident in an ink handwritten letter (folded 38x24cm sheet with broken wax seal remains) found within the book, dated August 1803, expressing condolences to the recipient after it appears someone in his family died, likely a child. Also a cutout from an unknown undated magazine article that explains Penelope's story. Binding 365mm tall.
