Raised bands, title label and gilt lettering; marbled endpapers and edges; blind dentelle turn-ins. Minor rubbing to bands, spine ends and some small patches of wear to rear board. Internally fresh and clean with a Latin bookplate to paste-down dated to 1897, the year after the volume's publication. Steele was the co-founder of the Spectator in 1711, along with Joseph Addison, and the Guardian in 1713. This is a collection of his essays with an engraved frontispiece of Steele, and facsimile of one of Steele's letters.
