Walter Besant was a prolific Victorian writer and philanthropist whose first novel 'All Sorts and Conditions of Men' described East London slums and brought about the People's Palace in Mile End, which educated and provided recreation to the poor. He also wrote and edited a number of history books on London, including this and his ten-volume 'Survey of London', published after his death.
