xx, 252 pp. Half brown calf over marbled boards with with an green title label and gilt lettering and ruling to the spine. Rubbing and darkening to the boards. Spine is rubbed and chipped with some loss to the gilt and fraying at the head. Spotting and some off-setting throughout. Page 251-252 is torn with loss to the bottom corner, and a blue-grey stain to p.252. With a naval bookplate to the front pastedown belonging to a Captain Charles Hewit and an ink ownership inscription to the title page. Published at the height of the Napoleonic wars, War in Disguise was written to rouse public feeling and move Britain to attack Napoleons disregard of maritime law. The book provoked immediate sensation amongst political and legal circles, and was in it's 4th printing just a year after it's publication in 1805 (Neff 2003). The 4 separate prefaces in this edition comment on the rapid development of events that followed the books initial publication.
