lxvii, 272, [2] pp. Red gilt-lettered cloth with bevelled edges. Fading to spine, with damage to its head. Ink inscription to prelims dated 1909, front and rear leaves darkened, with foxing, becoming less prominent. Reproduction of title page dated 1648. A defense of the King's policies during the course of the Civil War, now thought to have been a collaboration between Bishop John Gauden and The King. The portrayal of Charles in the text as a moderate, peace-loving ruler transformed opinion of his execution so that it came to be viewed by many as an act of martyrdom and made this one of the most popular works of the 17th century.
