New York: American Tract Society, 1895. --The Islands of the Pacific from the Old to the New-- published by the American Tract Society in NY. Signed & Inscribed by Rev. James M. Alexander on first blank sheet. Original decorated and illustrated publisher's cloth is rubbed. Frontis photo illustrations. 515 pp, 1 blank page, many fine illustrations. Old damp-stains on some edges. Overall, in good condition. The Hawaiian Islands, the Marquesas, Tonga, Fiji, New Zealand, and other Pacific Islands were ripe for conversion by Christian missionaries-- a quotation from Matthew 4:16 on the title page suggests the motivation for this book: "The people which sat in darkness saw a great light". Appendix A & B about languages of the Pacific Islanders. Appendix C has names of the missionaries to various islands.
