1968-69. The Trithene Junior Women's Club of Charlroi, PA was organized in 1935 at the height of the woman's club movement in the U.S. While women's organizations have always been a part of U.S. history, especially in African-American communities, it wasn't until the Progressive era (1920s-50s) that the clubs came to be considered a "movement." The first wave of this club movement in the Progressive era was started by white, middle-class women and a 2nd phase by African-American women. These clubs, most of which had started out as social & literary gatherings, eventually became a source of reform for various issues in the U.S. Both African-American and white women's clubs were involved with issues around education, child labor, juvenile justice, legal reform, environmental protection, library creation and more. Women's clubs helped start many initiatives: eg. kindergartens and juvenile court systems. Later, women's clubs tackled issues like women's suffrage, lynching and family planning. While participation in women's clubs has waned in the United States, many clubs continue to operate and influence their communities. Album approx. 12.5" x 14.5". 62 leaves, 134 pp. Very nice condition. Domestic s/h $20.
