1910. 1st Edition. --WORK, WAGES, and PROFITS - Their Influence of the Cost of Living- Inscribed & Dated by author, engineer and management consultant H.L. GANTT. In good condition-- ex-libris book, with occasional underlining, and colored, pull-out 'Gantt Charts' & graphs in clean condition. H.L. Gantt-- employed in 1887 by Frederick W. Taylor (chief engineer for Midvale Steel Works), assisted in the development of scientific management principles. Gantt's system of scientific management and 'Gantt Charts' were groundbreaking, revolutionary and a smashing success. This system would be used on major national infrastructure projects (including Hoover Dam and the US Interstate Highway System) and continues to be used as a tool in project and program management. Gantt's system was not without critics-- his industrial/scientific management tools provoked major resentments and opposition from labor's rank-and-file-- later in life, when Gantt came under the Influence of Thorsten Veblen, and with Gantt's rising belief in a social responsibility for business, he parted ways with chief engineer Taylor. Gantt would set up the' New Machine', an association which sought to apply criteria of industrial efficiency to the political process-- Gantt, along with Marxist engineer Walter Polakov, called for socializing industrial production under the control of its managers (the workers). Chapters: The Application of the Scientific Method to the Labor Problem/ The Utilization of Labor/ The Compensation of Workmen/ Day Work/ Piece Work/ Task Work with a Bonus/ Training Workmen in Habits of Industry and Co-Operation/ Fixing Habits of Industry/ Profits, and Their Influence on the Cost of Living.
