Laurentine Hamilton was a Presbyterian minister send to the gold miner of California. From the gold camps he served the Presbyterian church in San Jose and Oakland. During his tenure in Oakland, he was stripped of his ordination over claims of heresy. Taking most of his congregation with him, he founded what would be come the Independent Church of Oakland, which eventually be come the First Unitarian Church of Oakland.
