An early copy re-bound in full leather with ownership detals of William Spear (Son of Samuel Speare), a photograph purported to be of Samuel Speare as a child, family tree details of the Speare family, plus recent colour scans bound in at rear of St. Mary's Church, Rickinghall Superior, and the stained glass dedicated to Samuel Speare. Navy blue leather binding. 6.0" x 4.0" x 0.75". Gilt title to front board. Recent endpapers. Old note-paper cutting laid-down to the verso of the front board: "William Speare, 30 Gosford Rd. Beccles, Sfk." Also, to the verso of the front board is a recent adhesive address label: "5 Dolphin Close, Pakefield Lowestoft, Suffolk". Lacks half-title and title-page. Illustrated with 4 full-page engravings (including frontis). A quality binding made especially to preserve these momentos. VG. ** Samuel Speare was born in Rickinghall, Suffolk on 15th January 1853. He was the second child of a poor family and had eight siblings. Samuel became a missionary, spending five years in Zanzibar before returning to England to study for the priesthood. Sadly he died before he could realise his ambition. This book was first compiled in 1876 from letters written by and about Samuel Speare. The original editor was Revd. Thomas Wilkinson then curate of Rickinghall Superior and later Bishop of Zululand. *** Family history details show William Samuel Speare (1882-1916), was the nephew of Samuel Speare, and lived at 30, Gosford Road, Beccles, Suffolk. At the advent of the First world War, he enlisted in the Royal West Surreys, Pte. and was subsequently killed in France on Nov. 21, 1916 (towards the end of the Battle of the Somme).
