Spine slightly slanted, corners bumped, some edge wear/chipping. a few pages have a light crease running across upper right corner. Jacket shows a fair amount of edge wear and chipping. 1" tears at top of spine have created a sort of flap that is lifted up a bit. Circular 1" scrape on front of jacket probably where a sticker was removed. A little yellowing, but text is clean and unmarked. Translated by Naomi Walford.
"In a memorable scene in this gorgeously caparisoned novel which romps across the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, a Mohammedan slave dealer describes young Michael (the Wanderer of the title) as having a singular gift for landing on his feet like a cat, no matter what the circumstances. And it is an apt phrase, for certainly Michael (or el-Hakim-his Arabic anagram, meaning doctor) bears a charmed life. Heads roll, bronze cannon bombard, harem favorites connive, wily Levantines plot, political advisors topple, pirates swarm, lethal potions are compounded and imbibed, fortresses are besieged and lost, prodigious trials of strength and agility galvanize scenes of personal combat, and equally prodigious feats of endurance grace encounters of love-but through it all Michael, hardy, earnest, and perhaps a little naive, remains very much alive, whether buffeted as a slave or drenched in jewels by a grateful Sultan."; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
