xvi + 353 pp., index, 9 b/w plates, 3 maps, references, 50 tables. Blue cloth with gold lettering on spine, spine slanted, corners bumped, slight edge wear, bookplate inside cover, owner's name embossed on front end paper. Jacket in protective cover, spine sunned, slight edge wear. A nice copy. "The two villages discussed in this book represent two types of village in the plains of Mysore, South India. Wangala is a 'wet' village in the centre of the irrigated area. Dalena is a 'dry' village on the fringe. Before irrigation reached the area the two villages were almost identical in all aspects of their social and economic life. Irrigation has been the determining factor in the distinct roles the two villages have assumed in the regional economy. . . The author argues that economic development need not necessarily produce economic change. She finds, however, that where economic change does take place, there are corresponding changes in political and ritual roles and relations and in the principles of social organization."; 7" - 9" Tall
