Boards worn and frayed at bottom. DJ in protective plastic wrapper tapped to boards. Ex-library with usual stamps. Light stain on p. 115. Black and white photographs throughout text. "Abigail Scott's mother wept bitterly when she was born and her father was cross - she was a girl and a girl was grievance almost too burdensome to be borne. When Abigail's father moved the family west, she saw her mother die along the way, o a trip she hadn't wanted to take. In Oregon, marriage to Ben Duniway began as a round of house and farm work and babies, just as for the other women settlers, until an accident to Ben changed their lives. Abigail had to support the family, and she loved it! She went from schoolteaching, to running a shop, to editing one of the first newspapers in Portland. She fumed at the many injustices to women, but it was Ben who pointed out that things wouldn't be better until women could vote. This began Abigail Scott Duniway's fight for women's suffrage in Oregon."
