Ex-library with stamps and stickers, the pocket was apparently on the rear end paper as a 2x4" section has been cut out. Light blue cloth with silver lettering, 276 pp. Spine cocked, moderate edge wear and chipping. Jacket in protective plastic covering with some sunning and some chipping at top and base of spine, some tape residue on outside of boards. Text is clean and unmarked. ;
First American printing. Both end papers have a cutout diagram of the USS Dolphin with a legend showing what all the compartments were also a layout showing the huts of Drift Ice Station Zebra. Rear panel of dust jacket has a photo of a youthful Alistair MacLean in a turtleneck. ; Ex-Library; 7" - 9" Tall; 276 pages; " A British trawler operating in the North Seas has picked up an SOS from Ice Station Zebra, a British meteorological station on the polar ice cap. The message indicates that the Station has been mysteriously swept by fire and that time is running out for the handful of survivors. American and Russian long-range bombers circle the North Pole, trying vainly to pick up the location of Zebra, but their radar is nullified by the Arctic storms.
" At this point, the American nuclear submarine, The Dolphin, stationed in the Firth of Clyde, is ordered to proceed north under the Artic ice in the hope that she may be able to break through somewhere near the last reported location of Ice Station Zebra. Before she can weigh anchor, a British civilian doctor suddenly appears on board, with orders from the British Admiralty and some impressive credentials from Washington. The American submarine commander is suspicious of his credentials, but they seem to be in order. He is also unwilling to reveal the secrets of a nuclear submarine to a foreighner. Reluctantly, he takes him on board, not realizing what an important part the British doctor is destined to play in the adventures which lie ahead.
"Thus begins one of Alistair MacLean's most memorable novels of intrigue and suspense. The story takes the reader from the dangerous waters under the polar ice cap to the sub-zero weather above it. From the small accidents which can lead to instantaneous disaster to the planned attacks of a cunning and unscrupulous enemy. "
