Benedict Joseph Murdoch (1886-1973),was born in Chatham, New Brunswick he was best known as Reverend B.J. Murdoch. He was a priest and novelist. In 1915 he enlisted in the Canadian Army as chaplain to the 132nd North Shore Battalion, a unit in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. When the war ended, Reverend Murdoch returned to New Brunswick to serve as pastor at Jacquet River, in Restigouche Co., and Douglastown ( now known as Miramichi). After serving for nine years in the Douglastown he suffered from combat stress, (shell shock) and retired from the ministry on medical recommendation and spent most of the next thirty years living in seclusion in a woods cabin near Bartibog, ten miles from Chatham. Having no military pension he made money from his writing and the small stipends he received for each day he celebrated Mass. All his works were written in longhand since he never owned a typewriter. He died at Hotel-Dieu Hospital in Miramichi on 31 January, 1973 at age 86
