n.d (circa 1890) brown, gilt pictorial cloth cover and spine, 464 pages, illustrated, full colour frontis. with tissue guard, 4 full colour plates, full colour vignette title page, The full page illustrations are the work of Alfred Pearse, painter, black and white artist and illustrator of boy's books. He worked in London from approximately 1877 and died in 1933. The pictorial cover is the work of John Hassall, British watercolourist, poster-designed and illustrator. Hassall began his working life as a farmer in Manitoba, soon abandoning farming to study art in Antwerp and Paris in 1891-94. He was an original and versatile designer of illustrations, contributing cartoons to leading magazines, designing theatre posters, commercial posters, greeting cards, boy's books and nursery rhymes. He was elected to the RI in 1901and RMS the same year. The binding of this book is signed. A fine example of his work. It would be difficult to find this book in better condtiion. It has some very minor rubbing at spine ends and corners, and a small guarter-size water stain on top edge near spine which does not involve internal pages. otherwise it is bright, clean. Size: 8 Vo.,
