Octavo, three-quarter blue morocco and marbled boards titled in gilt with raised bands on the spine. The top edge is gilt. The spine is faded to light green and the corners are bumped. The covers are also slightly rubbed. x & 356 deckle-edged pages, illustrated with a pictorial title as frontispiece, and 4 etchings. There is a short tear to the front edge of the front blank. The title page and the front edge of the first page is darkened. The edge of another leaf is soiled. A very small piece of paper dislodged from the facing blank page has adhered to the bottom of the title page. A very good partially unopened copy. A fascinating character study of the audience which subscribes to the opera. A list of those subscribers and season ticket holders, most of whom occupy the private balconies, is often accompanied by brief biographical notes. The author has occasionally quoted the text of those more interesting letters which some noble has written when renewing his subscription. On more than one occasion, the author alludes to some scandals which have been written down about these high society folk.
