Small quarto [7 inches high by 5-1/4 inches wide], maroon cloth titled in gilt on the front cover & spine. The binding is lightly rubbed & bumped with the head & tail of the spine lightly chipped. Title, [1] leaf & 193 pages. Illustrated with black-and-white plates, including a frontispiece, & tail-pieces by J. H. Fry. The hinges are cracked. There is an owner's name dated 1883 on the flyleaf. The rear endpaper is chipped with a small piece out & with the bottom corner lightly creased. There is light foxing & soiling to a few pages. Good. A Civil War story of a fifteen-year-old boy, too young to enlist, who joins his brother in the cavalry as a bugler. At the end of the book, the narrator as a grown man looking back on his experiences, describes his story as "substantially a true narrative. There are no plots invented, and no fictitious characters introduced."
