Octavo, black cloth with rules in red, titled in gilt on the spines. The bindings are bumped & rubbed. The head & tail of the Vol. 1 spine are lightly chipped. There is a piece out of the head of the Vol. 2 spine & a tear to its tail. x & 343 pages; and viii & 352 pages; partially unopened. Illustrated with 52 black-and-white plates. There is a small piece out of the top margin of 1 Vol. 2 leaf where 2 leaves have been roughly opened. Good. Second edition.Hare writes in his Preface: "The Gurneys of Earlham were a Quaker family, who--through their personal qualities and their self-devotion--played a more conspicuous part than any other set of brothers and sisters in the religious and philanthropic life of England during the first half of the nineteenth century." He remarks that while some members of the family such as Samuel Gurney, John Joseph Gurney, Elizabeth Fry and their brother-in-law Thomas Fowell Buxton, were already more or less familiar, this is the first study of "the united family".
