Oblong quarto [9 inches high by 12 inches wide], softcover bound in printed white wrappers. The wraps are slightly bumped with some very light soiling to the rear wrap. 88 pages. profusely illustrated in color and black & white. Near fine. Edited by Gary Garrels. This book was published on the occasion of an exhibition (October 13, 1989 through June 17,1990) of thirteen large-scale paintings in the "Amerika" series, along with other work by Tim Rollins. Michele Wallace explains in her essay that in 1981 Tim Rollins decided to combine his own art-making with teaching art to black and Puerto Rican schoolchildren. This led to the founding of K.O.S. [Kids of Survival] and the Art & Knowledge Workshop. This project, involving kids who were "learning disabled" or "emotionally handicapped" produced the collaborative art which was shown in the exhibition.
