Over 35 words penned by the Irish Operatic Bass Allan James Foli on a 7 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide sheet of paper. The sheet is apparently the last page of a longer letter clipped away from the other pages. The text appears to pick up in the middle of a sentence "I sing it in G" and continues "Have not been out of town but may run down to Hastings for a few days." Signed "A.J. Foli", with a few more lines penned as a post script at the end "If you can possibly do it I would like my piece early in programme". Folded horizontally, the top edge is rubbed and slightly soiled. Remnants of gray paper adhering to the right edge of the verso suggest that this note was once mounted into an album. Good. Born in Tipperary, the Irish operatic singer Allan James Foli (1835-1899) studied with Bisaccia in Naples before making his debut as Elmiro in Rossini's Otello in 1862. He appeared in Milan, Modena, Turin, as well as at the Theatre Italien in Paris, successfully touring all the large towns of Great Britain, Ireland and America. His powerful artistic voice was very popular with all classes of nineteenth century society.
