Octavo, softcover bound in pictorial light tan wrappers with a portrait of Ingersoll on the front wrap. The wraps are nearly detached & are lightly bumped, soiled & creased with their edges slightly darkened. There is a small stain to the rear wrap & areas of staining to the lower halves of both wraps along the spine. The edges of the front wrap are lightly chipped. Pages [17]-32, printed in 2 columns. The inner edges of the lower halves of the pages are stained. The front edges of the first 2 leaves are slightly chipped & the page edges are slightly darkened. There are light vertical creases to the wraps & pages where the pamphlet has been folded. Good working copy. Colonel Robert Green Ingersoll [1833-1899], a Civil War veteran, was a highly popular orator and political leader, though his agnosticism, his support for the Free Thought movement and his views on religion, slavery and women's rights precluded him from any high political office. This lecture addresses the intellectual development of man as displayed in a row of human skulls; declares that "orthodoxy is that which rots, and heresy is that which grows forever"; and defends the right to liberty of men, women and children. The pamphlet is an early edition of the lecture.
