The American mystery fiction author Mary Roberts Rinehart (1876-1958) was often called the American Agatha Christie though her first mystery novel preceded Christie's by over a decade. Considered the inventor of the "Had-I-But-Known" school of mystery novels, Mary Roberts Rinehart is credited with coining the phrase "The butler did it" in her novel "The Door", although she did not use that exact phrase.
