Octavo, marbled boards backed with brown calf & titled in gilt on a maroon leather label between gilt-ruled raised bands on the spine. Marbled endpapers. The corners of the covers are rubbed & chipped. There is a large piece out of the leather near the head of the spine & the adjacent corner of the rear cover and most of the label & titling are lacking. The upper two inches of the front joint are worn. viii & 126 pages. There is dampstaining to the top inner corners of the pages throughout with foxing to the preliminary pages & occasional light foxing to the text pages. Good only. Douglas, after whom Douglas, Arizona was named, was born in Quebec and spent much of his early life in Scotland. For many years, as a metallurgist and mining engineer, he was involved in the management of several important Western American enterprises. Belgian geologist Jean-Baptiste Julien d'Omalius d'Halloy [1783-1875] was prepared by his family for a life in public service. Throughout his career he held numerous administrative and political posts but his real love was for science and in particular the science of geology which emerged in the nineteenth century and of which he is considered one of the founders. In 1808 he published his essay on the geology of northern France, which proved a seminal work and one of the main starting points of stratigraphic geology. He continued publishing important geological studies throughout his life. The text is in French. Scarce;
