INSCRIBED BY GRATIEN GELINAS TO MONTREAL RADIO HOST BERTRAND DUSSAULT - Octavo, 8-1/8 inches high by 6-3/4 inches wide. Softcovers bound in cream wraps titled in black & red on the front cover and the spine with a device on the front cover. The spine is slightly creased. 196 & [3] pages, illustrated with a frontispiece and 16 full-page illustrations from photographs of the stage production of the play. Very good, lacking the dust wrapper. Inscribed by Gelinas on the front endpaper to Montreal radio host Bertrand Dussault, dated "21 avril 1950" and signed in full by Gratien Gelinas. The French Canadian playwright, actor, producer and director Gratien Gelinas (1909-1999) is considered one of the founders of modern Canadian theatre and film. His works include "Tit-Coq", "Bousille et les Justes", "Hier, les enfants dansaient" and the "Fridolinades", the latter being a series of satirical revues featuring Fridolin, a poor Montreal boy attired in suspenders over a Montreal Canadian Hockey Jersey. Although not Joual, Gelinas' language is clearly that of Montreal and French Canada as distinct from continental French. Gelinas did not shy away from politics and the province's "Quiet Revolution" was at the center of his 1966 play "Hiers, les enfants dansaient". Gelinas was the founder of the Comedie-Canadienne and he was made an Officer, subsequently a Companion, of the Order of Canada, a Knight of the National Order of Quebec and received an honorary doctorate from the Royal Military College of Canada in St-Jean.Several of his plays were made into movies, including "Tit-Coq" in 1953, and "La Famille Plouffe" ran as a television series. As an actor, Gelinas' credits include roles in "Agnes of God", "The Canadian Conspiracy", "Cordelia", etc. Dust jacket present.
