Quite heavy foxing to the 8 black and white plates. Overall a nice copy of this title. Attractive binding. ; Second edition. xv, [1], 730 pages + [1] page errata + [3] pages advertisements + colour frontispiece (chromolithograph) + 1 colour plate (facing page 602, lithograph with hand-colouring) + 8 black and white plates. Numerous in-text illustrations. Rebound in quarter leather and marbled boards. Later endpapers. Spine with five raised bands, gilt rule and decoration. Red leather lettering piece on spine. Page dimensions: 220 x 139mm. This second edition is 223 pages longer than the first edition of 1855, Bagnall notes it has "more on Polynesian ethnology, geology and natural history with expansion of the Maori sections". Hocken notes "Much in the two editions is not trustworthy". Pat Lawlor includes this title in his 1948 list of "The Best New Zealand Books: A List for Libraries Students and Collectors". Title continues: "Illustrating the Origin, Manners, Customs, Mythology, Religion, Rites, Songs, Proverbs, Fables, and Language of the Maori and Polynesian Races in General; together with the Geology, Natural History, Productions and Climate of the Country."
