Soelberg Wells took the M.D. at the University of Edinburgh in 1856 and spent several years in Berlin as student and assistant of von Graefe. In 1860, Wells joined the staff at Moorfields in London, first as clinical assistant to Bowman and from, 1867 until his death, as surgeon. In 1865 Wells became professor of ophthalmology at King's College, London.
